 Gastroenterological Diseases and Surgery

GASTROENTEROLOGICAL SURGERY

The digestive system starts with the esophagus and includes the following organs: stomach, duodenum, liver, gall bladder, bile ducts, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. All benign and malign diseases of these organs are diseases of the digestive system, while the discipline covering internal diseases is called “gastroenterology” and the discipline covering surgical diseases is called “gastroenterological surgery”. The Gastroenterological Surgery unit covers the surgical treatment of digestive system diseases.

At the Gastroenterological Surgery department, gastroenterological surgeons, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and radiation oncologists adopt a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat all diseases of the digestive system, by means of surgical procedures including esophageal and stomach surgery, hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, colon and rectum surgery, obesity and metabolic surgery.

At our department, esophageal diseases (esophageal cancer, reflux, hiatal hernia), stomach and duodenal diseases (cancer, morbid obesity, metabolic surgery, all tumor types), small and large intestinal diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, cancers), anus and anal canal diseases (fissures, fistulas, hemoroid, incontinence, prolapses, abscess), liver-pancreas-gall bladder and bile duct diseases (hepatocellular cancer, hydatid cysts, portal hypertension, gall bladder stones, cholecystitis, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic pseudocyst, all cyst types) are evaluated and treated by specialists of the relevant disciplines. The patients are offered the privilege to receive treatment at universal standards by well-experienced and knowledgeable medical professionals who are close followers of technology and contemporary developments, adopting a patient-oriented approach. The diagnosis process is carried out with the support of radiologists, and interventional radiologic procedures are carried out if necessary  (such as biopsy, drainage, stent insertion). All surgical interventions are carried out laparoscopically or by methods of open surgery. Moreover, endoscopic interventions and endoscopic stent placement procedures can also be applied on the gastrointestinal system.

Follow-up and treatment of patients diagnosed with cancer is evaluated by a council consisting of specialists of relevant branches, while necessary arrangements are made in connection with pre-op or post-op oncologic follow-up and treatment procedures for patients requiring gastroenterological surgery.
